The               Magic               of               Yellowstone               National               Park
I               was               twelve               years               old               the               first               time               I               rolled               into               Yellowstone               National               Park               with               my               best               friend               and               her               family.

We               stayed               at               the               Old               Faithful               Inn               for               about               four               days,               barely               scratching               the               surface               of               what               there               is               to               see,               and               yet               we               were               awed               by               the               striking               beauty               of               the               land               and               its               wildlife.
I               eagerly               scanned               the               trees               for               sightings               of               moose               and               elk,               wondering               apprehensively               if               we               would               encounter               a               bear               or               a               wolf.
I               was               struck               by               the               bright               colors               of               the               natural               hot               springs               and               their               warm,               mineral-rich               water.
I               watched               the               mud               pots               bubble               and               pop               with               fascination               and               amusement.
I               was               shocked               by               the               sight               of               steamy               water               from               the               geysers               shooting               up               to               pierce               the               sky.
I               was               terrified               by               the               buffalo               herds               as               they               surrounded               our               van,               several               tons               of               muscle               and               sinew               jostling               and               bumping               just               inches               from               the               windows.
I               imagined               the               destruction               of               everything               around               me               as               I               learned               the               entirety               of               the               park               is               the               giant               caldera               of               a               super               volcano               that               could               explode               at               any               moment,               killing               millions               of               people               and               altering               climates               the               world-over.
The               wonder               of               my               days               in               the               Yellowstone               only               continued               to               increase               as               I               heard               the               thunder               of               great               waterfalls               plunging               to               the               depths               and               laid               eyes               on               the               delicate               beauty               of               sights               like               the               Mammoth               Hot               Springs,               where               the               limestone               seems               to               ebb               and               flow               with               the               water               that               has               shaped               it.
Covering               parts               of               Wyoming,               Idaho,               and               Montana,               Yellowstone               National               Park               was               founded               in               1872               to               preserve               the               unique               geological               character               of               the               area.

There               are               a               variety               of               activities               to               choose               from               for               visitors               to               the               park,               from               simply               seeing               the               sights               to               hiking,               camping,               horseback               riding,               boating               and               fishing.

For               more               information,               visit               http://www.nps.gov/yell/index.htm.
During               my               time               in               Yellowstone               National               Park,               I               spent               my               days               under               a               clean               blue               sky               and               fell               asleep               each               night               cushioned               by               the               great,               wild               mountains               that               surrounded               us.

I               learned               how               wondrous               the               natural               world               can               be,               and               how               important               its               preservation               truly               is.
There               is               a               power               in               the               Yellowstone               that               fires               the               imagination               and               moves               the               soul.

Of               all               the               places               I               have               traveled               across               the               United               States,               I               still               find               the               Yellowstone               to               be               one               of               the               most               enchanting.
